100 WATER HEROES: TEWOLDE EGZIABHER

Leader of Ethiopian Environmental Protection Agency

Tewolde Egziabher is an Ethiopian Environmentalist and Biologist who leads Ethiopia’s Environmental Protection Agency. In 2006, Tewolde was named as one of the UN’s Champions of the Earth, a prestigious environmental award. He has also won the Right Livelihood Award in 2000 "for his exemplary work to safeguard biodiversity and the traditional rights of farmers and communities to their genetic resources."

Prior to his work with the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Agency, Tewolde was the Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Addis Ababa. He continued on to serve as President of Aswara University for 8 years. Following his career in academia, Tewolde became Director of the Ethiopian Conservation Strategy Secretariat.

Tewolde is a respected Environmentalist and Scientist who has used his platform to advance environmental sustainability in Ethiopia. This makes him one of our #100WaterHeroes.
