Mina in Europe
International water activist and ultra-runner Mina Guli continues her Europe leg of the #RunBlue campaign
Guli will run marathons number 82 to 100 across Europe as part of the 200 marathons she is running in a year across the globe to raise awareness of water scarcity
Guli is asking companies and governments to take concrete steps to solve our water crisis as they use nearly 90 percent of the world’s water.
25 August 2022, Water advocate, ultra-marathon runner and CEO of Thirst Foundation https://www.thirstfoundation.org/ Mina Guli arrived in Sofia, Bulgaria, to continue the Europe leg of the RUN BLUE Campaign, which will see her running four marathons each week, completing 200 marathons around the world by March 2023.
The purpose of the RUN BLUE campaign is to raise awareness, to demonstrate the urgency of the water problem we are facing and to drive commitments to concrete action on water by governments, companies and organisations across the world in advance of the UN Water Conference in March 2023.
“The recent extreme temperatures and droughts in Europe are placing massive strain on water resources and are indicative of the scary changes that are to come in the future largely due to climate change,” said Guli. “Everyone is affected by water. Together, we all have a responsibility to help solve the global water crisis.”
The campaign started on 22 March 2022 (World Water Day) in Australia, over the past five months Guli has run 82 Marathons and has been joined by thousands along her route in Central Asia, down through Africa and now in Europe.
“I’ve had the privilege of meeting people who face extreme water challenges every day, I’ve witnessed their horrific stories and been scared for the lengths they have to go through daily to access what should be a basic human right. We have a big problem. The water crisis is urgent and it’s threatening our communities, our societies and our economies. I’ve seen it and I want the world to see it too,” says Guli, “not only to see it, but to take action to solve it.”
Over the next month, Guli will run marathons across Bulgaria, Albania, Sweden, Croatia, Austria, Germany and The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and France. This leg will finish in the United Kingdom, before moving onto marathons in the Middle East, Latin America, Asia and the United States where it will finish on the steps of the United Nations in New York at the opening of the UN 2023 Water Conference.
Ends.
